New Haven is cutting back on travel expenses in a way. The city has just banned using money for travel promotion and marketing. This wasn't a decision that happened overnight. There were plenty of discussions, at city hall about how to make the most of taxpayers dollars. The main concern was making sure the city is spending its money wisely. Now any public funds will have to go towards projects that can be measured. That actually help the community. No more throwing money at marketing campaigns that might not even work. It's all about being transparent and accountable, with the citys budget. Some people think that cracking down on spending could hurt our chances of attracting tourists and growing the economy.. Others believe that being smart, with our money is more important especially when times are tough. Theres also been a lot of debate about the city teaming up with companies. Now it seems like we're being more careful, about who we partner with. Like Avelo Airlines, which the city actually helped promote not ago.
The team up, between New Haven and Avelo Airlines has gotten a lot of people talking. On the one hand the airlines cheap flights and regional focus could bring in visitors. Get people flying into the city again.. On the hand some folks are scratching their heads over how this deal went down and whether public money is being used wisely to promote the airline. The big concern is that these kinds of partnerships can be an use of taxpayer cash. When you're dealing with funds you want to make sure they're being spent in a way that really benefits the community. In this case it's not entirely clear that's whats happening.City officials claim that teaming up with groups can be a win bringing in more customers, for local businesses and making it easier for people to get around. However not everyone is on board. Opponents think these partnerships need a look now that there are new rules about how money for travel promotions can be used. The whole debate highlight's a decision cities have to make; they want to help their economies grow. They also can't afford to be reckless, with their cash.
New Havens marketing and economic development are probably going to look a lot different that public funds, for travel promotion are being cut off. The citys going to have to get creative to bring in visitors without using taxpayer money for ads. I think we'll see emphasis on community events and local partnerships that make sense. It's a change. Maybe it'll lead to some innovative ideas that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The city will just have to be more careful, about who it partners with and make sure those relationships are going to pay off in the run.Whats interesting is how this decision could have an effect, on cities making them think twice about how they spend money on tourism and work with private companies. Some people are disappointed seeing it as a blow to their marketing plans.. Others think it's a chance to try something to create programs that are better for the community and the environment. Really it all comes down to whether city officials can come up with ideas that work within the rules and still bring in the economic benefits that tourism can offer. If they can pull that off it could be a win, for everyone.
